Os Jogos Olímpicos são grandes eventos que exigem enormes projetos de infraestrutura para a construção de vários estádios e instalações.
Muitos dos esportes têm requisitos específicos – corredeiras e pedras falsas para andar de caiaque, pistas enormes para saltos de esqui ou areia para vôlei de praia. Além disso, esses locais precisam ser capazes de suportar grandes multidões e ter a tecnologia necessária para gerenciar os eventos.
Como o ex-primeiro-ministro vitoriano Dan Andrews descobriu em 2023, organizar grandes eventos esportivos custa muito dinheiro (o cancelamento dos Jogos da Commonwealth de 2026 pelo primeiro-ministro vitoriano Daniel Andrews pegou todas as partes interessadas – funcionários dos Jogos da Commonwealth, atletas, entidades esportivas e funcionários do governo local – de surpresa).
Estima-se que as Olimpíadas de Tóquio tenham custado 23 bilhões de dólares australianos, grande parte dos quais foi gasto na construção de infraestrutura.
Um relatório de 2022 do Comité Olímpico Internacional revelou que 85% dos estádios, instalações e estruturas utilizadas nas Olimpíadas ainda estão em uso.
Mas como são utilizados, eram estruturas novas e o que aconteceu aos 15% dos espaços que caíram em desuso?
