Este documento apresenta as recomendações desenvolvidas pela Comissão Médica e Científica do COI e por diversas federações internacionais (FI) sobre a proteção de atletas que competem em condições de calor. Baseia-se em um grupo de trabalho, reuniões, experiência de campo e um processo Delphi. A primeira seção apresenta recomendações para que os organizadores de eventos monitorem as condições ambientais antes e durante a competição; providenciem gelo, sombra e refrigeração suficientes; e trabalhem em conjunto com as FI para eliminar limitações regulatórias e logísticas. A segunda seção resume as recomendações diretamente relacionadas ao comportamento dos atletas, incluindo o papel e os métodos de aclimatação ao calor; o controle da hidratação; e a adaptação ao aquecimento e ao vestuário. A terceira seção explica o manejo médico específico da insolação por esforço (IE) desde a triagem no campo de jogo até o atendimento pré-hospitalar em uma área dedicada ao calor, complementando os serviços médicos habituais. A quarta seção fornece um exemplo de como desenvolver uma análise de risco ambiental relacionada ao calor para competições esportivas em todas as FI. Em resumo, embora a hipertermia induzida pelo calor (EHS) seja uma das principais condições que representam risco de vida para atletas, ela é prevenível e tratável com a mitigação de riscos e a resposta médica adequadas. A proteção de atletas que competem no calor envolve a estreita cooperação do comitê organizador local, das federações nacionais e internacionais, dos atletas e suas equipes, e da equipe médica.
